Andrew W. Deckert M.D., M.P.H.

I have been a Health Officer, a public health doctor for over 16 years,
and a family physician longer still. I have 3 sons and enjoy coaching
in this wonderful area and community we live in.
I see a child’s early years, 0-5 years old, as being extremely
important. This period is when relationships are learned, when the
brain is formed, and when we as family and community members can make
the most long-term difference in the physical and mental health and
well-being of our children. Yet public spending per child 0-5 years
old is much lower than for older children and adults. To me, the main
promise and excitement of the Children and Families First Commission
is about changing our thinking and behavior as a community to give
higher priority to these formative early years. While the additional
dollars from the tobacco tax which funds our activities are welcome,
this amount of money alone is insufficient to improve the well-being
of our youngest. It will take time, energy and changing our priorities
as a community.
