First 5 Shasta Funding

First 5 Shasta - Funded by Prop 10
First 5 Shasta, the Shasta Children and Families First Commission, was formed in March 1999 in response to the statewide passage of the Children and Families Act, Proposition 10. The passage of Prop 10 added a 50 cent-per-pack tax to cigarettes, resulting in annual tax revenues of approximately $700 million per year. Funding is allocated to each county in California based on the number of live births reported each year. The Shasta Children and Families First Commission receives approximately $1.8 million per year in Prop 10 revenues to fund early childhood development programs and activities.

First 5 Shasta has invested nearly $12 million in programs and activities that enhance the lives of young children in Shasta County. Grant opportunities have resulted in funding awards that support the areas of focus identified in the Strategic Plan, published originally in 2001 and revised in 2005. Some major areas of investment include:

  • Early Care Initiative
  • School Readiness Initiative
  • Infant Mental Health
  • Early Literacy

Most recently, the Commission entered into a Request for Applications process to pursue organizational partners to participate in a $600,000 Initiative to Decrease Early Childhood Exposure to Violence. Learn more on the Available Funding page of this web site.
