Annual celebration: April 21-28, 2012

What is the Week of the Young Child?

The Week of the Young Child (WOYC) is an annual celebration of young children that was started in 1971 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Children are honored from coast to coast as communiies unite for the WOYC celebration. Each year First 5 Shasta works with local organizations and businesses to create a Shasta County celebration focused on young children, ages 0-to-5, their families and caregivers. This celebration:

  • Reminds our community of the importance and value of early childhood.
  • Offers many opportunities for fun and learning at events and activities for children, families, professionals, and all community members.
  • Encourages stronger early childhood investment - the whole community benefits when we invest resources in the health, education, and well-being of young children.

Ways to Join the Celebration

  • Plan a project - hold an event or activity during WOYC (see Meeting Schedule to attend a planning meeting to learn about help and funding).
  • Make paperdolls with children to go on display during WOYC.
  • Request paperdolls to display at your business.
  • Donate supplies or items for event prizes.
  • Get the WOYC calendar of events and plan which events and activities to attend!
